Spark plug tool for 502?

Post by Mark »

Ever replaced the front left spark plug located right next to the header at a BB 502? Yes, its frustrating and it seems that removing the header is the only option.

I am looking for a spark plug tool that allows me to do exactly that without removing the header. There is no chance with a common spark plug socket!

Any suggestions?

Hi Mark,

I'm no expert but made a few one-off tools in my time.

How about a narrow ring spanner cut off and a square hole for a square driver on the end of the socket wrench.

If necessary you could grind off the ring end to get into the tightest spot. Don't know the space issues but thought that a few minutes on a grinder and a Dremel for the square hole would do it.

Don't try making a hex hole - way too elaborate and tough to get right and the torque you will apply (around 20 ft/lbs) 27 Nm doesn't need the 6 faces.

OR, weld on a suitable nut to what's left of the spanner shaft and use your socket wrench on that.

Sorry about scruffy images, but I guess you get the idea.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Great idea Gordon! I believe Bill shortened a spark plug socket by grinding it down and then uses an open end wrench. I am sure he will be on this site soon and give his 2cents. 8-)

Mark,
yes, what Sue said is what I used and it worked great.

Did the same as Bill and it worked well. Put in the platinum plugs (guaranteed for1000000km) and never bother again.

Would that be ... Necessity is the Mother of Invention ?

Super - yup - the translation is accurate - but one would use the term: "Not macht erfinderisch" ...to coin a phrase. :-)

Btw: I just butchered a spark plug socket. I guess I have to redo the whole task...

I took a 3/8 drive deep socket I believe is 13/16 for the plug and cut it shorter and it works for me..
