I know everyone has probably heard this question asked a dozen time but here goes. What kind of tire should I put on my bike. It's a 2004 zz4 with a 350. Should I go back with the Avon tire? or is there something better out there.

Also how many miles can you get on a tire if you aren't doing burnouts?

I purchase the bike used and I'm not sure how many miles was on the tire before I purchased it.

Well, there isn't much controversy about tires, oil, the reliability of the Nesco transmission or dielectric grease.

I am as happy as a pig in slop with my Falken tire. Under 100 bucks, mounted and balanced. I know it looks weird when I lean over, but I cannot tell any difference between it and the Avon at twice the price. I'm a car tire guy for life

In a snapshot...the Avon is rated for your bike, the Metzeller 240 fits but i'm not sure its rated. I dont know of any other MC tyres being used, anybody else? if you are going to a car tyre you got to want to go to the car tyre. I wouldnt rush into it until you've come to grips with the pro's & cons, it took me 7 years to make the switch but i'm as slow as a wet week. Otherwise the Avon is just fine, and easiest on your bike if you are into burnouts. In the wet they are fairly slippery and a ya buds over the years have successfully cut additional grooves to make it more all weather. I dont ride in the rain (one big pussy!) so i never done it and with the uncut avon i could have easily travelled over 10,000 miles except i didnt cause i burnt the fuck out of it. I'm a car tyre convert and intend on putting a wider one on for the in-your-face but it comes at a handling cost.

i got 18 inch wheels. bike came with them. had a motorcycle tire 240 avon on it. went to a car tire wheel and car tire. will NEVER go back to motorcycle tire. did not affect my handling in corners, for me there is little to no difference in cornering. i do not know the mileage as i have never had a tire on it i didn't do burnouts with.

Nothing beats the looks of a car tire. And you get used to the handling after a while. I've had two General XP2000 265 tires and I was not slower than others with MC tires in curves. They are cheap and last long. I liked and hated the flexibility of the car tire. The good point was: it was kind of a "suspension" because it made rough roads feel a little smoother. The down side was a high speed wobble above 120 mph because of the high side walls of the tire.

Now I have a 330 Avon tire. It looks good, and no more high speed wobble. When it was new, it handled better than a car tire. But very soon, after about 2000/2500 miles, the tire has a flat surface on it's tread, and the "car tire handling" comes back. It handles like shit now at 3000 miles on it, especially at slow speeds and uneven ground. But I am used to that because of the car tires I have ridden.

Dry Traction: Both tires I have run have a real good traction on dry roads. I would mess with every Boss Hoss with a 230 Avon tire in a heartbeat, even a Big Block - at least from 0 to 60mph. Because they just can't get their power to the ground. I have seen stock Small Block Boss Hoss's with a 230 tire, spinning their tire at 1/3 of the throttle. The dry traction of a 230 tire must be real bad.

Wet Traction: honestly said, both tires I have run are slippery like hell on wet roads and still scare the shit out of me in curves when it starts to rain....hahahaha....

From all I have heard the 230 stock tire must be the wisest choice. Most people say it handles much better in curves than every car or wide MC tire, and it's safer because it's designed to handle the weight of the Boss Hoss....but then again...the dry traction and the looks....hmmmmm.....

Brad Here. Thanks for the info on the rear tire. I may stay with the Avon for this tire change. Reason is I really like putting this bike into curves way faster than I should. I usually come out the other side with the floor boards scraping really bad. One of these days you will read about me in the Funny paper.

Another things is I LOVE TO RUN ON TOP IN. However My fast and your fast might be two different things. I might find out Your really Hauling butt and I just think I'm doing something.

I have had the speedo maxed out, (DID I JUST SAY THAT) I mean a very reliable source told me the bike would do that, HAHA. Any way I think you get the Idea. I usually start off riding kind of layed back, but then something happens to me and next thing I know I'm running way to fast.

P.S. I'm Detailing the bike with all the panels off and changing fluids, battery, (the usuall) as soon as I finish I will post some pictures.

I think the nose wheel tire from a B27 will handle good, look good, have a good speed rating and can probably be purchased cheap from a surplus store. Airplane tires are the next step for these bikes as everything has already been said about car and bike tires. Dave

There is not a car tire that handles exactly like the Avon 230 and I don't think anyone can argue that...it is all I will use for now...I may try a car tire someday.

I got 30,000 kms out of an Avon which is around 18,000 miles without doing burnouts.

that's a lot of kilometers...woow...

As said, mine handles like shit with 3000 miles on it and I think I can get another 2K miles at the most out of it. That's only 8000 or so kilometers, and I did not many burnouts either, cause the bike was new and I had to break in the engine.

The 230 Avon does not do well in the rain, unless it is grooved.
My last Avon is still sitting in my back yard; been there since I
burned it down to the cords. That was about 20,000 miles
ago. When I installed my first car tire, I waited for the first
rainstorm, geared up, hit the motorway at 75 mph, aimed at
every big puddle of water I could find, and the bike never wiggled.
That made up my mind, period! Also, when I was doing funeral
escort with the Avon, the tire would never hook up under
hard acceleration in wet conditions, and hard acceleration is
exactly what I needed at that time. With the car tire,
there is MUCH better traction. I will NEVER go back to the Avon!
I have tried a Pirelli P600 235/60WR15, and I now have the Falken
512 P225/60R15. Next I would like to try a P245/60R15.
The Falken 225/60R15 is 25.6" in diameter.
The Pirelli 235/60WR15 is 26.1" in diameter.
The 245/60R15 will be 26.6" in diameter.

Car tire hands down! I have a virtually new Avon 230 for sale if anyone is interested.

I don't know if it's still there but the other day someone had a rear rim and tire for sale and the add said the tire was a 260 - 15 Avon . I think it had to be a misprint . I never heard of a 260-15 Avon motorcycle tire ????

they probably meant 230/60/15 Jacky Boy.

Yeah... it was listed as a 260/30/15........ Must have the numbers mixed up

I thought so too , but I thought maybe I missed something . If there was such a thing 260-15 motorcycle tire I probably would have stuck with my 15" rear wheel and just changed to a rounded rear fender to match the tire and saved myself $$$$ .
