Rear Tyres

Have just started looking at buying a Boss Hoss.

Do they come standard with a car tyre on the rear?

What is envolved in fitting a 300 type motorcycle tyre?

Thanks,
Steve.

The 5 I've owned all came with Avon-brand bike-profile tires fitted. Haven't seen a car tire on a BH bike for many years now, although at one time they were not an uncommon mod, and an active discussion point on the original BH forum.

Only the early ones came with a car tire, maybe 92-95? Member Paul H here can probably confirm for sure. The standard and only approved tire is the Avon 230 which is specifically designed for the Boss. That being said, many run a 300 with no problems. You will need the correct size rim, spacers and a fender that is wide enough.

91 and a few years after that were all car tires bikes.
I don't know just when the factory went to the
Avon tire. All the early 15" car tire used a high
aspect ratio 65-75 which means high side walls.
That added up to much side wall flex at high speed
because every one went with radials (soft side wall).
I found that Mickey Thompson made a bias ply
tire in 275 15 70 and I bought one and rode it
to 135 MPH on a single gear clutch bike in the
quarter mile. With a radial at 120 it would shift
from side to side in the rear.

The car tire was standard through at least 1998. I don’t mind it, but haven’t ridden a V8 bike without one.

As far as I know the Avon motorcycle tire came first in 1999.
But on the standard rim you can also but a 235 to 245 car tire, which many do because the car tire last longer.

The 300 conversion is EXPENSIVE and you will see way less miles out of it than a 230 Avon or a car tire.

I fitted a 245 Marshall Matrac to my R3 and although it did great mileage it was awkward at slow speeds on cambers and kerbs.
My BH came with the 300 Avon and has the same handling quirkiness with kerbs when slow manouvering and throws you off balance in a split second if you're not prepared for it!

I run a P235/60R15 car tire on the back of
my bike at this time.
I have tried a P225/60R15.
BOTH were great !
After this P235/60R15, I am going to a
P245/60R15.
The Avon rear tire/tyre was too slippery
for my tastes.
When doing funeral escorting with the Avon,
it would just spin at the slightest hint of
water or oil on the pavement.
The car tire doesn't slip like that, and the
car tire/tyre lasts MUCH longer.
In my opinion, once you get used to the
car tire/tyre, you won't wanna go back
to the Avon bike tire out back.
If your rear rim will accept either one,
try them both, and make up your own mind.

While we're on the topic of tires, what are people running up front these days? My 97 has a Harley rear tire.
