Ricky - what is your recommendation on the proper way to check the transmission fluid - with the engine off for a short perod of time and checking the sight tube as per the owner's manual, or by checking the sight tube with the engine running and in neutral as some do, or is either way acceptable and it doesn't really matter?

You should Always go with the manual.Sonny wrote:Ricky - what is your recommendation on the proper way to check the transmission fluid - with the engine off for a short perod of time and checking the sight tube as per the owner's manual, or by checking the sight tube with the engine running and in neutral as some do, or is either way acceptable and it doesn't really matter?
I on the other hand am a rebel, I check mine in low gear with engine running and oil already hot; the oil level just barely visible in bottom of sight glass.

Ok so I'm gathering that either way is acceptable and it's really not all that critical. Thanks.

With the bike running and level and the oil inbetween the two marks you will get about another 1/2 to 3/4 quart in the system...I am a Rebel also and that amount helps in cooling as the oil is circulated about 10% to 13% less...has to help..

I do it the way Barry does. Here is a picture of the extra 4 quart transmission oil tank on my bike.

You are adding almost 5 quarts then Dave to a 7 quart system...almost doubling it...cool stuff...does California Boss Hoss still make that kit? We installed only one of those a few years ago..SQ4MN wrote:I do it the way Barry does. Here is a picture of the extra 4 quart transmission oil tank on my bike.

I have three 12" double pass heat sink coolers on my trans cooling system . One mounted in the lower radiator spoiler and two stacked one on top of the other behind the trans in a neat package . This set up only adds about a guart to the capacity but the cooling seems amazing . I have never seen trans temp above 160 degrees under any condition since I installed this set up several yesrs ago .

I would have guesses that with that many coolers. I had a temp gauge on a couple 502's I had and never saw over 190 with either and they had the stock setup.hogv8 wrote:I have three 12" double pass heat sink coolers on my trans cooling system . Re: 2 Speed Bike Trannys available again!!
Barry, It costs more to change the oil but the added capacity means besides running cooler the oil doesn't break down or become contaminated as quickly as it would with half the amount. I was told by Victor a few weeks ago that his other company which is a metal stamping company is going to make them again. If I ever order a new bike I would have one put on from new.CanuckHoss wrote:You are adding almost 5 quarts then Dave to a 7 quart system...almost doubling it...cool stuff...does California Boss Hoss still make that kit? I agree Dave. It should be stock. There is no room for it in the SS frame I believe.

Yes Barry there is room, I built my own a several years ago. Took it off and put on a F350 oil cooler in front of the rad. Temp never gets to 150 now no matter how hot it is outside. Less junk and weight hanging on the bike now.
